Educational AI, Public Pedagogy, and the 2026 European Guidelines: The Strummin’ Gym Approach to Music Education

Abstract

The 2026 European Guidelines on the ethical use of artificial intelligence in teaching and learning provide a vital framework for navigating the nexus of cognition, learning, and technological mediation. This paper argues that the educational legitimacy of AI depends not on technical efficiency, but on its capacity to enrich the "cognitive ecology" of the classroom by supporting pedagogical judgment. By examining the structure of the Guidelines, the study shows how they contextualize the AI Act within the institutional ecology of schooling, advocating for domain-sensitive design grounded in embodiment and teacher mediation. Music education serves as a primary illustration, revealing non-binary and interpretative dimensions of learning – such as improvisation and stylistic accompaniment – that many current self-directed AI applications fail to address. In this context, the Strummin’ Gym framework is presented as a case study for integrating teacher-led mediation into AI-powered tools. By keeping the educator at the center of both the neural network's training and the pedagogical relationship, the framework moves beyond rigid binary assessments toward stylistically plausible support. This approach demonstrates how AI-assisted platforms can transform musical practice into a guided, reflective, and progressively autonomous experience, reclaiming the teacher’s role as the indispensable mediator of music as a living, relational art.

Lara Carobacchini, Conservatorio Bonporti di Trento, Italia

Lara Corbacchini (1971), since 2013, is full professor of Music Education for Teachers (Pedagogia Musicale per Didattica della Musica) at Conservatory of Trento. Since 2001 she has hold similar role in other Italian conservatories.
At Conservatory of Trento she is supporting research activities: she is Coordinator of Group for monitoring and development of research; she is member of Scientific Committee of DiMMI (Integrated Multidisciplinary Musical Dictionary, University and Conservatory of Trento).
She holds two Masters of Art (Piano and Didactic of Music) and one Master of Science (Philosophy, theoretical field).
She is member of Directive and Scientific Committee of the journal “Musica Domani” (scientific journal n.0391-4380, Italian ANVUR catalogue). For this publication, she is also Editor of section Viewpoints, concerning focuses on psychology of music international literature.
She published more than 40 works: peer-reviewed papers, monographs about teaching methodologies, reviews about psychology of music for educators.
Recently she has been member of Project CrazySquare at Department of Information Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics, and Center of Excellence DEWS, University of L’Aquila (IT), realizing an ICT support system for playing guitar within Italian middle schools (suitable for Special Needs Education also).
She recently published a large case-study research about a part of local private/public system for elementary music education.
She is interested in development of learning/teaching strategies by interdisciplinary approaches.
